DeMaio Calls for Reform at San Diego VA Hospital

According to an internal performance scorecard that was leaked to the media, San Diego’s Veterans Hospital in La Jolla only receives 3 stars on a five-star scale.  The scorecard release comes two years after shocking revelations of falsifying performance reports for wait times and just days after a veteran died with a wound infested with maggots because his bandages were not changed at a VA hospital in Oklahoma.

The scorecard rating reflects a number of performance standards such as wait times, quality of care, mortality rate, and more.  According to the scores for San Diego, the La Jolla hospital falls short on patient satisfaction, patient wait times, responsiveness to calls, and mental health services.

“It has been two years and the VA health system is still failing to care for our veterans properly,” noted Carl DeMaio.  “It is time to open up the VA health system to competition, institute external performance reviews, and fire poor performing employees,” said DeMaio.

DeMaio outlined a four-point reform plan to improve the VA on his radio show.  In addition, Dr. Robert Smith, who is the head of San Diego’s VA Hospital, joined Carl DeMaio on the show to answer some tough questions.
