The growing homeless population in California has posed trouble for policymakers and residents alike. While Republicans and activists have proposed solutions that prioritize and factor in one of the main drivers of chronic homelessness, mental health and addiction, Democrats have moved forward with policies prioritizing housing.
Enter Project Roomkey.
Project Roomkey was launched in March 2020 by Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Democrats to address increased homelessness concerns amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. The program, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, was meant to "provide non-congregate shelter options, such as hotels and motels, for people experiencing homelessness." A number of state and local agencies, such as the San Diego government, embraced the program and began offering taxpayer-funded hotel and motel vouchers to the homeless.
Now, two homeless registered sex offenders have been arrested and arraigned on multiple felonies related to the alleged rape of multiple underage girls at an El Cajon motel. The sex offenders, Lawrence Cantrell and Michael Inman, used Project Roomkey vouchers to rent the motel room.
According to the police, Cantrell had sexually explicit video on his phone showing Inman with an underage girl.
Chairman of Reform California, Carl DeMaio, says that the Democrats in support of Project Roomkey are responsible for the young girls being raped.
"Project Roomkey is an absolute disaster that allowed sex offenders to rape an underage girl on the taxpayer dime — and who knows what else — and it should be immediately suspended,” said DeMaio. "Of course, I don't expect these politicians or their cover in the liberal mainstream media to do anything about it.”
That's why DeMaio and Reform California are leading a campaign to flip key target seats in 2024 and throw the politicians that support Project Roomkey out of office — and elect common-sense reform-minded candidates instead.
