California Republican voters are about to enjoy a status they haven’t had in decades: relevancy to the nation’s Presidential election!
That’s because California’s Republican Presidential Primary has been moved up from June to March 2024 - and a major rules change was recently adopted by the state party that provides for a “winner-take-all” allocation of all of its 169 of its delegates.
A new straw poll by Reform California indicates that - if the election were held today - Donald Trump would wipe the floor with his competition in the California Republican Presidential Primary. In fact, he’s garnering 65% support - and therefore is in a comfortable spot to secure all 169 delegates by winning a majority of votes statewide.
The Reform California straw poll was conducted online between June 20th and August 8th and received 4,053 responses. The full results of the poll are as follows:
“If Donald Trump wins 65% of the Republican primary vote in California, as our straw poll suggests — or if he even comes close to it — he will win all 169 delegates and be well on the way to winning the nomination,” explains Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California.
“But March is a long way off and that is the equivalent of several political lifetimes, so I hope to see all candidates making reaching out to California voters a top priority,” DeMaio says.
“In previous election cycles, California was treated as merely an ATM machine for campaign donations and candidates only visited the state to talk to mega-donors - but now they need to come to California to talk to real voters at the grassroots level,” DeMaio adds.
In previous presidential primary elections, California has been pretty irrelevant to who ultimately wins the nomination of each political party. Despite its large size and big delegate count, California has usually held its primary election late in the process in the month of June. By that point, one candidate had always consolidated an insurmountable lead and the contest was effectively over. But in 2024, that will all change.
“This is a huge opportunity to rebuild and energize conservatives in the state as we head into the 2024 general election — we can make or break the momentum of any candidate who has an early lead from Iowa and New Hampshire,” DeMaio says.
In addition to fostering participation in the presidential primary, Reform California is focused on its statewide 2024 campaign to block state and local tax hikes and flip target seats. The organization recruits, trains and endorses candidates for office while deploying volunteers into crucial areas. Reform California’s “Plain English” Voter Guide is one of the most-referenced voter guides in the state for center-right voters.
“We need everyone to get involved in the fight to restore sanity in California - and 2024 offers ample opportunities to make a difference so we hope people sign up to volunteer and contribute to the cause today,” DeMaio says.
“No matter who you support, I’m calling on every Californian to get into this fight by signing up to volunteer with a campaign or at the very least attend an event,” DeMaio concludes.
