Carl DeMaio, who serves as Chairman of Reform California — one of the largest grassroots groups supporting the recall — offers the following statement in response. It should be noted that DeMaio, who is a prominent statewide Republican leader and just happens to be gay, made history in 2008 as the first openly gay man elected to the San Diego City Council.
“At a time when an openly-gay man is considered by many to be the frontrunner to replace Gavin Newsom, this partisan Democrat front group shows they aren’t interested in advancing equality but rather protecting the broken and corrupt Sacramento political system that benefits them.
These false and divisive smears are another desperate attempt to distract voters from the mounting failures of Gavin Newsom. The damage being done by Gavin Newsom is hurting all Californians regardless of their color, creed, or sexual orientation — and that’s why the grassroots movement powering this recall is the most diverse one we’ve seen in the history of recalls in our state.”
