Sick of talking about Covid-19? So are most people in the country, and California Democrats fear it will continue to trend that way as indications point to the virus becoming endemic, rather than a pandemic.
Just this week, Dr. Anthony Fauci finally joined the chorus of what public health experts have been saying for months by announcing that “We are certainly right now in this country out of the pandemic phase.”
So why are many Covid emergency mandates in California still in effect?
This month California workplace regulators are set to extend Covid mandatory pay to workers affected by the virus through the end of 2022. This would require employers to continue to pay employee wages while they are out sick. Small businesses have struggled with the rule, as it applies to almost every workplace whereas normal state sick leave only applies to businesses with 26 or more employees.
Carl DeMaio, chairman of Reform California, says that the policy is just a way to continue covid hysteria and maintain emergency powers.
“Many liberal groups and politicians don’t want to admit that Covid isn’t as big of a problem anymore, especially going into an election year where they’ve been relying on Covid fears to force through socialist policies that ordinarily would never be supported by voters,” DeMaio said.
DeMaio says Democrats need to stoke Covid fears to win elections. He points to the Newsom recall election where Newsom used Covid fears to come from behind to win. DeMaio says that if we’re out of the emergency phase, then emergency provisions should end — unless the policies are still about politics.
“It’s just common sense — stop extending these policies if we’re getting back to normal life, especially if they’re adding stressors to our businesses who have already been hit hard by the pandemic,” said DeMaio.
“We cannot be in emergency mode indefinitely, and liberal politicians need to learn to win on issues other than covid fear,” he explained.
DeMaio says the upcoming elections are shaping up to be a nightmare for Democrats, with a national wave against them of as much as R+13 according to some polls. He says that the best way to end the unnecessary emergency provisions and return complete normalcy in California is to seize on this momentum and flip key seats in the election.
“Don’t like these policy decisions?” DeMaio asked. “Then change the decision makers — and we have plenty of target seats that if we flip can make a huge difference in California policy for years to come,” he said.
